Benji's Story

At 28 weeks gestation, Benji’s kidneys were found to be significantly larger than average. Following numerous tests and appointments, he was diagnosed with a congenital growth disorder that put him at about a 25% risk of developing Wilms Tumor, a type of pediatric kidney cancer, until age 8.

Benji was placed on quarterly monitoring through the pediatric cancer predisposition program at our local hospital. Two days after turning 7 months old, during his second screening, doctors discovered a small Wilms Tumor in his right kidney. A week later, he underwent port surgery and spent his first Christmas on chemotherapy. Despite the initial treatment, the tumor continued to grow. After a lengthy open partial nephrectomy to remove the tumor, pathology revealed a high-risk histology. Benji was then switched to a more intense chemotherapy regimen.

Eight months later, he completed chemotherapy and was cancer-free. However, just before his one-year remission mark, a second Wilms Tumor was found in the same kidney. Benji underwent port surgery and additional chemotherapy. Thankfully, the new tumor responded completely to the initial treatment. He will finish therapy in October and begin a yearlong maintenance regimen every three weeks, aiming to make a significant impact against pediatric cancer.

Despite his challenges, Benji lives life to the fullest with a smile, enjoying activities like playing outside, spending time with his dog Mudd, swimming, and eating yogurt. His resilience teaches us that hardships don’t define us.

Over the past two years, we've realized the critical lack of federal funding for pediatric cancer research, receiving only 4% of the NCI budget despite being the leading disease killer in children. That’s why we’ve partnered with Rally Foundation to fund research directly impacting Benji’s care.
