Halle's Story
Halle went to her normal 4 year old check up. Her doctor did not like the feel of her belly. It was firm and he was sure a tumor was there. She went for a CT scan 2 days later. We were told it was Hepatoblastoma - a type of liver cancer. Surgery was scheduled.
Halle would get a port inserted and after surgery would need chemotherapy. The doctors wanted a MRI to see the tumor better and also a biopsy to be able to make the correct chemo to attack her tumor. The MRI was before surgery. The MRI showed the tumor was dangerously attached to the liver, it looked invasive, so they told us no surgery. This was devastating news. But the new plan would be to first do chemo to shrink the tumor, and then surgery in 6 months or so. We were still waiting on the biopsy and had the port placed in. When the biopsy results came in the tumor was NOT Hepatoblastoma!! Praising God for this! It was calcifying nested stromal-epithelial tumor (CNSET).
Halle is the 40th person ever documented in literature to have this type of tumor. The doctors started doing research on what little they knew about it. Amazingly one other case has been seen at CHOA Scottish Rite and our oncologist had been on the team years before! God shows up again! The research suggested that chemo doesn’t help or do anything to this type of tumor. Also this type of tumor is a lot less aggressive than what they thought it first was.
So the new plan was to just cut it out and be done!! No chemo! Surgery was March 30, 2021. It was successful and the ENTIRE tumor was removed!! They took a biopsy of the tissue remaining and tested it to make sure no cancer cells remained. 5 days later…on EASTER morning we got the news that the biopsy had clean margins and Halle was CANCER FREE!!!
We now go every 6 months for MRI and ultrasound checks of her liver. Halle is now in survivors clinic. Her doctor has said her case is unique and doesn’t follow the typical cancer path…but they are confident that if the tumor ever grows back they can just cut it out again. The liver is amazing and can regrow so quickly! Raise a Halle-lujah became our theme.
And Childhood Cancer is what breaks our hearts. We are living and celebrating EVERY DAY that Halle is cancer free. We hope to raise funds to help many more children become CANCER FREE!
Raise a Hallelujah! "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world! John 16:33
