Rally Kid Jett's Story

On Sunday, March 17, 2024, a little over two weeks after being diagnosed with strep throat, I took my 2-year-old son, Jett, to a local hospital. He had persistent fevers, was pale and lethargic, and had bright blue bruises and petechiae on his legs. After reviewing his symptoms, the doctor mentioned ITP as a possibility but ordered blood work and arranged for transfer to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA), warning us the doctors there would move fast and mention cancer. I already knew. His symptoms pointed to leukemia. We arrived at CHOA at 2:30 a.m. on Monday, March 18. By 3:30, a hematologist confirmed our worst fear: Jett had cancer. Things moved fast—labs were sent for genetic testing, we received a crash course in hematology, and Jett needed immediate transfusions before chemo could begin. Once his counts stabilized, he had his port placed and started treatment. Just four days after diagnosis, we were discharged. Going home was terrifying. Without the medical team, it felt like leaving the hospital with a newborn. But we figured it out—how each medication made him feel, what foods he could tolerate, how to manage his care while keeping life steady for his four healthy siblings, and how to juggle work and appointments. Now, 15 months later (as of June 2025), Jett is doing fantastic. Despite a weaker immune system, he’s stayed healthy and is now in the maintenance phase of treatment, with monthly appointments and 11 months to go until he can ring the bell. His siblings have stayed active and supportive, and while our journey has been hard, we’re grateful—it could be worse, and our hearts are with all the families facing childhood cancer.
