Rally Kid Sam's Story
Sam is a 13 year-old boy with a bright smile who kicks a soccer ball around or cheers on his friends from the sidelines. He has an incredible spirit, often inspiring others with his positive outlook and determination.
In 2021, Sam began having night sweats, bone pain & fevers that went on for months. In May 2021 Sam started at Aflac with treatment at the infusion center. After 8 months of things worsening, Sam’s family sought a second opinion. Eventually Sam was diagnosed with HA20 insufficiency, a genetic incurable illness that can cause progressive organ failure. HA20 affects Sam’s bones, lungs, esophagus, immune system & liver. Sam has had 3 surgeries in 13 months from the disease progression & is on immunosuppressants at home, occasionally needing transfusions at Duke Children’s Hospital.
