Rally Kid Grayson's Story
At just two and a half, Grayson was diagnosed with autism. As we began ABA therapy to support his needs, he suddenly became pale and lethargic. After multiple lost lab results, doctors revealed he was severely anemic and needed an immediate transfusion. Transferred by ambulance to Egleston (CHOA), we learned on December 14, 2023, that Grayson had Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). He would need 4–6 rounds of chemotherapy, each lasting 25–40 days inpatient. With autism and being non-verbal, doctors warned Grayson would face added challenges. Four days later, he had a central line placed, a lumbar puncture, and began chemotherapy. The first hospital stay was especially hard. Grayson and I spent Christmas alone, and just after the holiday he lost his hair. Over the next months, he endured setbacks like a central line coming out, an intensive treatment phase with chemo doses over 10x stronger, and long stretches of hospitalization. In seven months, he spent more than 200 days in the hospital, over 150 nights with only one parent present, had 7 ER visits, 21 blood or platelet transfusions, 7 lumbar punctures, countless sedations, and multiple surgeries—all while missing holidays and even his third birthday at home. Despite it all, Grayson grew stronger. Once considered non-verbal, he left treatment speaking in sentences. He found new interests, met new people, and amazed everyone with his resilience. Now, Grayson has finished chemotherapy and entered his post-treatment phase. After five years of remission, he will move to a survivor clinic and continue lifelong monitoring for relapse and side effects. Today, he’s thriving—starting Pre-K in a typical classroom with ABA support. His personality is warm, genuine, and unforgettable. Ask Grayson what he wants to be when he grows up, and without hesitation he’ll say: a doctor.
