Rally Kid Brittney's Story

In September I started noticing some changes with my bright, happy, joyful girl… she stayed exhausted, started having strange allergic reactions, and gaining weight in her abdomen area… the first hospital we took her to stated it was just constipation and we tried everything under the sun for 2 weeks. She was in so much pain, could hardly stand, had no appetite, and was constantly in tears. I had enough and decided to take her to Vanderbilt Children’s hospital where they immediately did a CT and blood work, within a matter of hours our entire world was flipped upside down, as I was brought back to a room and told oncology would be taking over and we would be admitted immediately. We spent 24 days in the hospital where she also had to spend her 16th birthday being admitted, and where she underwent 3 surgeries (they removed 22lbs of malignant ascites fluid from her abdomen) multiple scans and her team had her starting chemo within the first week there. We finally got an official diagnosis of it being a soft tissue sarcoma called desmoplastic small round cell tumor. Since then she has undergone chemotherapy every two weeks, being admitted every time (7 days out of the month). On March 18th we were finally at a point to attempt her resection surgery where they removed her spleen, appendix, gallbladder, her omentum, the layer of her peritoneum, a wedge section of her diaphragm, and a wedge section of her , they took both of her fallopian tubes, her ovaries, and her uterus. Then they did a heated chemo wash inside of her abdomen for 90 minutes. She was in ICU for about 6 days, and in the hospital a total of 2 weeks. She has recently been cleared to re start chemo which she started this past week… we are expecting to only need 4 more rounds of chemo and then she will start radiation. She has started to act like herself again, and remains in the most amazing spirit! She is one tough girl, and will continue to fight hard as she looks forward to healing, being able to go back to school and be with her friends, and get back to playing softball!!
