Rally Kid Za'Mani's Story
On Friday 9/27/24 our world felt like it was coming down…what we thought was just a normal visit bc of a small swollen lymph node on Za’Mani turned into a possibility of leukemia. So they scheduled a biopsy of his bone marrow for that following Monday. We prayed and kept hope that the news would be something not so heart breaking but on 10/3 we received the news that Mani did in fact have T cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He was admitted that day to begin treatment. He was discharged within a week as it seemed he was doing well with treatment. Fast forward a couple weeks he began having some unusual pain and was very uncomfortable. We would find out on 10/28 that our world would take another turn his T-cell All is now complicated with fournier’s gangrene and E. coli. He immediately had to be taken back for a debridement of the infected area due to the gangrene and removal of his port due to the E. coli. After the initial procedure his heart rate and blood pressure began to be unstable which caused him to have to be moved to ICU for almost a month. While also taking a pause on chemo treatments not doing the expected plan but a bridge to get us through.During that time he endured several debridements, ended up with an ostomy, and NG tube . Through lots of prayer and an amazing medical team he was able to return to Oncology floor within a month and discharged from there within a few days! Unfortunately, only a few days later he would begin with fevers and vomiting which ended us back in the hospital for a few more weeks and within that time the NG tube was removed because he started doing so much better eating! He was finally released a few days before Christmas ! Finally it seemed as things were going so much better on Jan 6 2025 he received another port to start the planned chemo and he had a bone marrow biopsy done. Jan 9th we got the call our guy reached remission! He has had more hospital stays and blood/platelet infusions since December. It sure wasn’t smooth sailing in the beginning .He still has to proceed with treatments for about 2 more years to keep the abnormal blood cells from coming back. To gain strength back that he has lost over time he also does physical therapy 2 times a week. Our guy as well as all the other children dealing with cancer have to overcome so much. Treatment effects each child differently and sometimes you have to take a different course like Za’Mani! This is why research is important.
