When Ruby was diagnosed with cancer in 2015 at just ten years old, she believed it was simply the “one bad thing” that happens in a lifetime. As she grew, Ruby came to understand that it was not the hardship itself that defined her, but what she chose to build from it. Cancer may have broken parts of her childhood, but it also gave Ruby resilience, courage, and an unshakable belief that “it will be okay again,” even when okay felt impossibly far away. Cancer took Ruby’s hair, her fertility, and her sense of carefree living. In return, it strengthened her with bravery, determination, and a deep appreciation for life. The things that once felt ordinary—dance, school, relationships—became lifelines. Dance transformed from an afterschool activity into a celebration of what Ruby’s body could do. Being on stage was no longer about perfection; it was about gratitude. School became an opportunity to grow and explore new perspectives. Relationships were no longer assumed; they were nurtured and treasured. Surviving cancer also sparked a sense of responsibility. Grateful for a second chance, Ruby stepped into leadership within the childhood cancer community, committed to helping others facing similar battles. Over the years, dance, education, relationships, and advocacy have become the pillars of Ruby’s life—foundations upon which she continues to build. She sees herself not as someone defined by what was broken, but as someone rebuilt stronger. Ruby’s journey revealed a calling to storytelling. Through journalism, she hopes to uncover untold stories of resilience and injustice, transforming pain into purpose and tragedy into meaning. Cancer did not end Ruby’s story. It became the foundation from which she continues to rise.
