Rally Kid Malachi's Story
Just after his second birthday, my son Malachi had a seizure in the car that wouldn’t stop. At DeKalb Medical Hillandale, doctors intubated him before he was airlifted to Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital. That’s where I heard the words no parent wants to hear: brain tumor. Malachi was diagnosed with tectal plate glioma, a malignant midbrain tumor. Looking back, the only sign was that he seemed sleepier than usual. Malachi spent four days in the ICU, had two brain surgeries, and stayed in the hospital nine days. He took seizure medication for a year and thankfully hasn’t had another seizure since. He began two rounds of chemotherapy, then had a year off when the tumor shrank. In 2024, it began growing again, so he’s back on chemo, with treatment planned into next year. In four years, he’s only been hospitalized once since starting chemo. Despite it all, Malachi wakes up smiling and ready for the day. The Children’s Hospital team and his social worker have cared for him as more than a patient. His journey is one of courage, faith, and strength—reminding me daily that joy is possible even in the hardest seasons.
