Rally Kid Rupi's Story

On July 16th, we took Rupi to her pediatrician for her routine well-visit. She had a lingering cough, and out of caution, a chest X-ray was ordered. We never imagined that would be the beginning of the hardest chapter of our lives. That same day, we were urgently redirected to Sacred Heart Children’s ER in Pensacola for additional imaging. A repeat chest X-ray and a full CT scan of her chest, abdomen, and pelvis revealed a mass on her right kidney with over 20 nodules in her lungs. Within 48 hours, our two-year-old was in surgery. On July 18th, Rupi underwent a total right nephrectomy to remove her kidney. On July 25th, our fears were confirmed: Rupi was officially diagnosed with Stage 4 Anaplastic Wilms Tumor, a rare and aggressive form of kidney cancer that had already spread to her lungs and lymph nodes. Because of the severity of her diagnosis, Rupi was immediately placed on a Children’s Oncology Group clinical trial giving her access to the most aggressive and promising treatment plan. She will be undergoing chemotherapy and radiation for a minimum of 10 months. Our world was turned upside down in less than a week. Since her diagnosis, Rupi has shown an unshakable strength and spirit. Even in the midst of weekly infusions, hospital visits, and scary procedures, she smiles. She sings. She reminds us every day what true bravery looks like.
