Rally Kid Asher's Story

On August 29, 2024, we took Asher to Scottish Rite for an emergency MRI after a neurologist grew concerned about his headaches. Scans revealed a massive cerebellum tumor and blocked fluid causing cranial pressure. That night an EVD was placed, and the next day Dr. Brahma removed 99% of the tumor. Asher spent weeks relearning to walk, talk, and eat, and came home on September 10. He was diagnosed with Group 4 Medulloblastoma, with chemo beginning September 24. Asher’s treatment included 6 cycles: 3 induction chemo cycles and 3 consolidation cycles. Each induction cycle lasted about a month with week-long chemo at Arthur M. Blank Hospital followed by fevers, long admissions, and transfusions. Despite harsh side effects and nausea, God blessed us with caring nurses who reminded us of His presence and even allowed us to spend Christmas at home. Consolidation cycles required month-long admissions with thiotepa and carboplatin, stem cell transplants, and strict isolation in the BMT unit. These were some of Asher’s most traumatic days, yet also filled with blessings from nurses, crafts, dinosaurs, and school. The love and care from his nurses—especially Miss Sydney—showed us God’s light through the darkest times. On April 23, 2025, Asher completed his sixth cycle, but MRIs showed uncertain spots. Doctors added 6 months of “maintenance” chemo, now becoming standard for high-risk cases. While difficult news, we felt peace knowing God gave Asher a greater chance at healing. Before leaving the hospital, Asher’s central line was replaced with a port, letting him bathe and swim. That same day, surrounded by family, friends, nurses, and therapists, Asher rang the bell to mark the end of inpatient chemo—a joyous blessing filled with God’s presence. This summer, Asher rested, grew stronger, swam, played with Rory, went to the beach, and was simply his dinosaur-loving, spirited self. I’ve realized God wants me to be thankful—not for cancer, but for what it brought us. We’ve learned love, grace, joy in darkness, and the value of every second. God has blessed us with Asher, a small warrior who shows what it means to overcome great battles. For that, I praise Him.
