Rally Kid Alex's Story

When Alex began losing mobility on the right side of his body, we knew something was wrong. After several visits to the emergency room and a CT scan, doctors discovered a brain tumor. He was admitted for further testing and a biopsy, which confirmed the diagnosis of Clival Chordoma on July 7, 2021, at just eight years old. From there, a team of doctors worked with us to develop a treatment plan that included surgery, rehab, and radiation. Alex’s first surgery was a success—he regained movement and spent about a week in inpatient rehab at CHOA Scottish Rite. Shortly after, however, Alex developed a CSF leak that caused vision problems, nausea, and severe headaches. This required another hospital stay and eventually a second surgery to repair the leak. Once recovered, he was able to continue with his treatment plan. But Alex’s fight wasn’t over. During a routine MRI at Egleston, he suffered several strokes that left the left side of his body paralyzed. He endured another long stay in the PICU, where he required both a tracheostomy and a feeding tube. Despite these setbacks, Alex showed incredible resilience. With therapy, determination, and countless hours of hard work, he slowly began to recover. After a third surgery, Proton Beam therapy, and unwavering perseverance, Alex has made remarkable progress. Today, at 12 years old, he no longer needs a trach or feeding tube. He is thriving in 6th grade and working hard every day to be the energetic, determined boy he once was. Alex continues with active treatment to prevent his tumor from growing, and his strength and courage inspire everyone around him.
