Rally Kid Sadie's Story
I'm Sadie Ely, a 17-year-old from Rome, Georgia. In November 2023, I was living a normal teen life when I began having severe knee pain. I thought it was growing pains but asked to see an orthopedic doctor on 11/10/22. X-rays showed something abnormal, leading to an MRI that revealed a large tumor on my left tibia. I was sent to CHOA for a biopsy on 11/21/22. I was told if I woke up with a port, it meant cancer. I woke up and felt my chest—I knew my life had changed. I was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, a bone cancer with no stages. I began chemo on December 7. It was a hard journey—painful, scary, and overwhelming. I leaned on my faith and the memory of my great-grandfather who passed during my treatment. On March 7, 2022, I had limb salvage surgery. My leg was saved, but I now have foot drop. A spinal fluid leak during surgery caused intense headaches and delayed therapy, turning a one-week stay into three. Eventually, I started chemo again and began physical therapy while in a leg brace for 8 weeks. Learning to walk again was tough, but I kept pushing. After months of therapy, braces, and another surgery, I rang the remission bell on September 5, 2023. But the fight wasn’t over. On May 17, 2024, I had nodules removed from my left lung. I’m still in therapy, but grateful for how far I’ve come.💛🎗️
