Rally Kid Avie-Lynn's Story

Avie-Lynn was diagnosed with B cell ALL Leukemia in March of 2023. She was almost 2 1/2 years old. She has petechiae on her shoulder and neck, that is the only symptom she had. We took her to the pediatrician who immediately wanted bloodwork. After receiving her bloodwork, we were told that things did not look great, and she suspected leukemia. We were given the option of Nashville, Louisville, or Memphis. Whichever hospital we chose we needed to go home and pack a bag for at least a month. In that whirlwind of news it was a school day. My older children were in school, and we were just told that there was a good possibility we would be gone for a month. We went to the kids school, let them see us and sissy. We told them that sissy had to have some test done, and we would have to stay in the hospital for a little while. Then we made the trip to Nashville. Vanderbilt Children’s has been our treating hospital. We went in through the ER and was admitted, we were given the diagnosis and a port placement along with her first treatment started the next morning. Avie-Lynn is very sensitive she hasn’t handled anything as expected, and has had terrible side effects from the beginning. She hasn’t handled anything has severe mucositis multiple times, she has developed multiple severe infections, ICU stays, and septic shock. She had finally made in to maintenance only to relapse in January of 2025. In June of 2025 she developed severe methotrexate toxicity. Her team then made the decision to omit methotrexate from her protocol. We’ve finally made it back into maintenance, and hope the end of her treatment will come soon!
