Rally Kid Asher's Story

On August 29, 2024, we took Asher to Scottish Rite for an emergency MRI after weeks of headaches. The scans revealed a golf-ball-sized tumor in the cerebellum of his brain that had also caused nearly four times the normal amount of fluid to build up in his brain. The following day, Asher’s neurosurgeon, Dr. Brahma, performed a six-hour brain surgery and removed 99% of the tumor. In the days that followed, Asher had to relearn how to walk, talk, and eat. We soon received the diagnosis that would change the course of our lives: medulloblastoma, Group 4, an uncommon subtype for a child his age. Asher began aggressive high-dose chemotherapy, stem cell transplants, and endured infections and more than 20 blood transfusions. There were days that were simply dark. But even there, God met us. He gave us nurses who cared for Asher as if he were their own and countless reminders that we were never walking through any of it alone. In November 2025, Asher reached the end of treatment. So many members of his Angel Army came to celebrate that the hospital had to move his bell ringing into a conference room. After everything those walls had witnessed—the fear, sickness, prayers, tears, and victories—we watched our little boy ring that bell. Since finishing treatment, Asher has had two clear scans, continued working hard in therapy, learned to jump again, and can now walk up and down stairs independently. And now, the little boy who once had to relearn how to walk, talk, and eat has started Kindergarten. Cancer does not simply disappear when chemotherapy ends, but when I look at Asher today, I am overwhelmed by how far God has brought him. He is learning, growing, getting stronger, going to school, playing, laughing, and he still really, really loves dinosaurs. Cancer took a great deal from our family. But in the places it emptied, God showed us just how much He could fill. We learned what it means to be loved by a community, that joy can exist alongside fear and grief, and not to take ordinary days for granted. Most of all, God blessed us with the privilege of watching Asher fight. Our small warrior has endured battles no child should ever have to face, and through it all, he has shown us what courage, resilience, and joy look like. I see answered prayers. I see how far he has come. And I see the goodness of God woven throughout a story I never would have chosen for our family. For the gift of Asher, I praise Him.
