Rally Kid Charlie Story
Charlie is your average 4 year old who loves to play outside with her brothers and swim! She loves gymnastics and singing. Monday May 11th started out like any other day until I noticed the huge bruises on her back. I called her pediatrician who got her in immediately for bloodwork. We were sent home like nothing was wrong until my phone rang at 7:30 at night. As soon as I answered the call I could hear it in our favorite doctor’s voice something was wrong. We were told to get back to children’s hospital as quickly as we could and to be prepared to stay the night. So I packed a bag for 1 night (still not processing). We had more bloodwork done and waited and waited for what felt like an eternity. At 2:30 a doctor came into our room and 3 nurses followed and stood in the doorway no one saying anything. Until finally the doctor looked at us and said I’m so sorry but I’m very confident that your daughter has leukemia. My world stopped. The room was spinning and I was in utter disbelief.
There was no way my perfectly beautiful little girl sleeping beside me was so sick and I hadn’t known it. We were admitted that night and taken upstairs where we were met with the kindest people I could have ever asked for in that moment. Later that day we told our oncologist who gave us the specifics on our daughters type of leukemia. What we knew at that moment is that what she has was extremely rare and very aggressive. We found out that day it was far to risky to put in a port due to her form of leukemia causing her blood not to clot. She got a picc line that day and had it for over a month. We spent 2 weeks in patient at children’s and then started our treatment plan. We spent the next 30 days going to and from the hospital for daily infusions!
Our girl has been through 96 days of treatment so far and 72 of those days she’s spent 4-5 hours a day in a hospital receiving treatment. She never complains, she never whines. She is the strongest girl I know! We are so incredibly proud of her and her journey!
