Rally Kid Amaya's Story
On December 19, 2024, our lives changed forever when my daughter Maya was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at just 12 years old. One day she was simply being a child, and the next, our world became hospitals, chemotherapy, medications, procedures, fear, and learning medical language we never wanted to know. Maya’s journey has included long hospital stays, ICU admissions, serious infections, heart complications, pain, and moments when I was terrified of losing her. I have watched my daughter endure more than any child should ever have to endure. Through it all, she has continued to fight, smile, laugh, love music, shop, and find pieces of normalcy wherever she can. Childhood cancer did not only change Maya’s life. It changed our entire family. It affected our routines, finances, relationships, emotional health, and sense of safety. I became her mother, caregiver, advocate, nurse, and protector while trying to keep our family together and continue working and completing my degree. Maya is more than her diagnosis. She is funny, fashionable, intelligent, loving, and full of personality. Cancer may be part of her story, but it will never define who she is. Our greatest hope is that more awareness, research, and funding will lead to safer treatments and a future where no child or family has to experience this pain.
